  • Bruno Belhoste

Bruno Belhoste , Professor of History at the University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and Director of the Institut d'Histoire Moderne et Contemporaine (IHMC), studies the history of science and technnology in the context of social and political change. His main research topics are on the development of science in France in 18th and 19th centuries. His first book, about the French mathematician Cauchy, has been translated in English, Russian and Japanese. He has also written several books and articles on the history of scientific education in modern France, especially on the French Polytechnic school. His most recent book, Paris savant (Armand Colin, Paris,2011), is devoted to a spatial and institutional geography of the Parisian scientific world in 18th century. It shows the emergence of new scientific practices and their clash with the revolutionary crisis that will result in the closing of the Academy of Sciences in 1793. Bruno Belhoste prepares the second part of Paris savant, which deals with 19th-century science in Paris, and is working on the history of mesmerism, on which he has recently coedited a collective book, Mesmer et mesmérismes en contexte (Omniscience, Paris, 2015).
