Based on the newly found Genealogy of the Chen Family, this paper depicts in detail the mathematical activities of court mathematician Chen Houyao (1648-1722) during the Kangxi reign. It also tries to clarify Kangxi emperor’s audiences with him, and the mutual contacts among court scholars, in order to better understand his essential role in the compilation of the Shuli jingyun and his contribution in the field of geometry. Finally it points out that historians of science should pay more attention to and make use of genealogies. |
